PedsAcademy proudly offers virtual reality experiences for our students. Virtual reality worlds transport students to authentic learning environments—exploring Mars, touring the Louvre—and allow children to transcend their disease or respective condition.
A robotics engineering context offers engaging elements that support the development of mathematical reasoning and content knowledge. PedsAcademy uses Lego Mindstorms, Sphero, Ozobot, and WonderWorkshop's Dash and Cue robotics kits.
Avatars and Pedagogical Agents
PedsAcademy also addresses children's education and health inequities through the study of cognitive, metacognitive, affective, and motivational processes and the use of avatars and pedagogical agents.
Welcome to PedsAcademy
The University of Central Florida’s PedsAcademy at Nemours Children’s Hospital is the world’s first pediatric school program designed to provide children in hospitals with extraordinary, research-backed educational opportunities specific to their respective disease or condition. Our team of UCF affiliated faculty is on site Monday through Friday from 10-5 to help your child succeed in school. Our faculty are experts in the fields of mathematics, science, reading, engineering education, the humanities, and special education. Whatever your child’s unique needs are, we are here to help.
Rich, conceptually-based K-16 mathematics curriculum presented in a variety of formats including robotics and immersive spatial displays. All mathematics content integrates cognitive therapy specific to disease or condition.
Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) are put into practice in a K-16 science curriculum that integrates mathematics, engineering, and technology with hands-on citizen science projects including marine biology and coastal restoration and NASA missions.
A K-16 strategic curriculum focusing on reading, writing, and communicating utilizing a variety of instructional formats, including a rich, diverse collection of print and digital texts, differentiated instruction, and virtual reality
K-16 curriculum focused on defining and delimiting engineering problems that face our social and natural world. Combining materials from the Orlando Science Center, NASA, and the Museum of Science, Boston, students explore cross-cutting concepts of mathematics, technology, and physical, life, and space and earth science.
K-16 curriculum focused on literature, history, and languages. From Shakespeare to Harry Potter, students learn and celebrate foundational literature, world cultures, and languages.
PedsAcademy at Nemours Children’s Hospital is exactly the kind of partnership that represents the best of what we are capable of doing: it will improve the lives of children and their families; it will help experienced and emerging educators improve their ability to work with children for whom school is not an option at the moment in time; it will encourage medical professionals to approach patients and their families from new perspectives as learners and thinkers. The community is extraordinarily fortunate to have Megan Nickels, PhD (UCF) and Terri Finkel, MD, Ph.D. (Nemours) collaborate to create this opportunity.
