Dr. Megan Nickels is an Assistant Professor of STEM Education in the College of Community Innovation and Education and College of Medicine at the University of Central Florida and the Founder and Faculty Director of PedsAcademy at Nemours Children’s Hospital. Dr. Nickels is an alumna of Illinois StateUniversity where she received her Ph.D. in mathematics education in 2015. She received her undergraduate degree in early childhood education from Augusta State University in Augusta, Georgia in 2006, and her Master of Science degree in mathematics education from Illinois State University in 2012. Dr.Nickels taught elementary school in urban, rural, and hospital settings from 2006-2015. Dr. Nickels researches how children with critical l illnesses (cancer, HIV/AIDS, sickle-cell disease, etc.) learn mathematics through the use of educational robotics and immersive virtual reality. She conducts her research using WonderWorkshop’s Dash and Dot robots, the Lego Mindstorms EV3 robotics kits,and the HTC Vive virtual reality system. Dr. Nickels’s research has been supported in part by $2.3+ million dollars from NASA and the Elizabeth Morse Genius Foundation. She is an active member of the American Educational Research Association, Association for the Education of Children with Medical Needs, The Association of Pediatric Hematology Oncology Educational Specialists, National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and the North American Wittgenstein Society.
